Port Isabel and South Padre Island

No Rain today!!  headed East to Port Isabel and South Padre Island.

Port Isabel has a few museums and dolphins..

around town they have the "Generals" walk..

we seen about 10 of these plaques, all having fought in the Mexican/American war.

Treasures of the Gulf Museum focused on three Spanish shipwrecks which met their fate in 1554 just 30 miles north of Port Isabel.

Port Isabel Historical Museum focuses on the history of Port Isabel and the Mexican/American war.

these jewfish were taken out of gulf..

a beautiful chair..  don't know the history, just liked the way it looks.

Point Isabel Lighthouse constructed in 1852.

to get to the top you have to climb 69 very steep steps..

it was not easy going up or back down..

beautiful view from the top..

bridge to South Padre Island.

lightkeepers home.

after the hike up those stairs it is time for lunch.

it sure smelled good but we came for seafood..

next door was

Oysters and shrimp.  the oysters were ok, but the shrimp was fabulous so was the cole slaw..

time to go across the bridge to the island.

South Padre Island:  sand castle in the visitor center

The gulf side (east) of the island:

the middle of the island (north side):

the south end of South Padre Island is all condos, hotels, stores and restaurants.

The Laguna Madre (west) side of the island.  the average depth is 3 feet!

land surfers.

the weather turned, it got very windy, cloudy and cool.  we went to the Birding Center.  great hiking boardwalk and we identified 3 more birds!  and seen our first Texas Alligator!

Time for dinner before we head back (about 75 miles):  of course seafood was on our minds.  I had the grilled shrimp:  absolutely the best (might be better than lunch!)

Eric had the award winning shrimp:

it was seasoned, then wrapped in bacon then had a sauce on it..  mine was MUCH better!

we are hoping to get back for a weekend on the beach and sun.  not sure if that will happen this year! but we did enjoy our day and hope to come back.

  1. Climbed up into a lighthouse when we went to upper Michigan last year. For me it was really hard because I am a wee bit claustrophobic, but I just had to see what it was like from the top. (There were some people who should have stayed at the bottom because they had to turn back down midway) I have some beautiful pictures from the top that I wouldn't have gotten if I chickened out. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do... Wish we had thought to take some shots like you and Eric did on the stairs. I think John took one of me but not as good. Great job....
